I think it would be a good idea to have a [+] button right of the right-most tab for opening a new tab (same as Ctrl+T).
This behaviour has become a standard in web browsers.

Also, middle click should close a tab.

Thanks for the feedback.
We will fix so that also middle mouse (alt+click) will close tabs in the next beta.
However for the + control there is the File->New SQL Commander option and the rightmost button in the main toolbar to create new editors. A + control in the tab area would make it mimic for example browsers but in the scope of DbVisualizer adding tabs include not only editors but also object view tabs. The latter require that a specific object is selected and for adding these databases objects list is used.
